Houston, TX – A driver driving the wrong way hit an oncoming 18-wheeler causing it to lose control and careen off the road over a barrier wall and onto the highway feeder road below.
According to ABC13, the accident happened on the Southwest Freeway near West Bellfort in the early morning hours. The wrong way driver and 18-wheeler driver were both killed in the accident.
Wrong-Way Driving Accidents Common In Texas
Wrong-way driving accidents are violent and typically fatal. Making it worse, these types of accidents are increasing in Texas. Traffic studies show there were 77 wrong-way driving accident deaths annually from 2015 and 2018. This is a significant increase from 2010 to 2014 where there were 60 deaths per year. Of all the states, Texas has the highest number of wrong-way fatal accidents.

- Scan the road ahead
- If you encounter a wrong-way driver, pull your steering wheel to the right.
- At night, drive in the right-hand, outside lane. Many wrong way drivers believe they are driving the “slow” lane.
