Tips To Avoid Being Involved In An Accident With a Drunk Driver

Even though we all know drinking and driving can result in serious injury or death, people still do it. It's likely you have passed a drunk driver at some point. To minimize your chances of being in a motor vehicle accident with a drunk driver, consider the following:

  • Try To Avoid Driving Late At Night - Automobile accidents can happen at any time and any place. However, the likelihood of being involved in an accident with a drunk driver increases in the late and early morning hours, particularly Midnight to 4:00 a.m. If you can avoid being out late at night, do it. You might be a safe and careful driver, but a drunk driver isn't.
  • Drunks Like Holidays – Holidays can be a hazardous time to be on the roads, especially late at night. Be extra vigilant while driving during a holiday.
  • Don't Follow Too Close Behind – If you notice a car driving erratically, try to keep your distance. Don't try to pass. Stay far away as possible and call 9-1-1 to report the driving behavior.
  • Be Extra Careful At Intersections – Many drunk driving accidents occur at road intersections. Take extra caution during your approach, particularly in the late and very early morning hours. If you're stopped at a red light, don't immediately begin to move forward when your light turns green. Look both ways first to gauge the traffic approaching the intersection from your sides.
  • Don't Drive After Drinking – Obviously. Your reaction time is slowed and your ability to quickly react is impaired. This is the best defense against you being involved in a drunk driving accident.
