Common Causes of 18-Wheeler Accidents
An 18-Wheeler is big and heavy. Many 18-Wheelers can weigh 80,000 pounds or more, depending on the permitted load. When an 18-Wheeler is involved in an accident with a passenger vehicle that weighs approximately 3,000 pounds, the outcome can be devastating. If the driver of the passenger vehicle is not killed, they often sustain catastrophic injuries that can lead to physical, emotional and financial ruin.
Drivers of 18-Wheelers and other commercial vehicles have to follow a unique and complicated set of laws and rules that are intended to not only protect the driver, but other motorists who have to share the road with these vehicles. The laws and rules are designed to address the common causes of 18-Wheeler accidents such as:
- Speeding
- Failing to maintain the truck
- Driving while distracted
- Driving while tired
- Driving at night
- Driving in inclement weather or changing weather conditions
- Driving while under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol
- Driving while in violation of Hours of Service requirements
- Driving with an excess or unpermitted load
